Do You Have a Real Job?

"Why don't you go get yourself a real job!"

Who has heard this phrase before? Either from family or friends or just people in their life. I definitely have and that is why I am writing this post! I want to talk about this concept that people have in our society that you need to have a "real" job in order to succeed in life. The idea of a real job is probably a desk job (corporate job) or something similar where you can go to mon-fri, 9-5, and have the weekends off to relax. Well, not everyone wants to do that! Shocker, I know!

Just to make things clear, I do have a "real" job. Blogging and YouTube is not my job, it is just a hobby. My "real" job is working at a store as a Senior Manager (one step down from the Store Manager). You might think this should be defined as a real job but many think otherwise, just because my schedule is not MON-FRI 9-5 or just for the fact that it is in the retail industry. People have a misconception about retail, that it is the worst industry to be in. If you are with the right company, it can be quite enjoyable.

When people think about retail, they think that it is for people who want nothing out of life, who are still trying to figure out what they actually want to do. Some people even think that they are better than those who work retail. Well, that might be the case if you are working in retail part time while you are still in school and want extra money. I actually started that way but worked my way up to where I am today.I have advanced in my field. I have a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design and I do want to use it and start my own company but for now I am learning a lot from just managing a store and learning the ins and outs of it.

Going back to how not having a real job relates to retail. Many people always tell me that I need to get myself a real job where I can just sit at a desk and do whatever that entails for me to do. Well, I am not that type of person. I don't want to be in retail for the rest of my life but I am a creative person and I want to be able to use that creativity to do many different things. For now, retail is my REAL JOB, where I go to every single day and make  money. Yes, I have a crazy schedule and it is not ideal but that doesn't make  my job worse than your job.

It's not just about retail though, its about other non traditional jobs. In today's world, we can turn anything into a job, and not all of those jobs will be 9-5 Monday-Friday and that is ok! Nobody should feel like they need to fit in with the "normal" people. If you can turn a hobby like blogging, YouTube, painting, writing, cooking into a job then more power to you! That means you can wake up every single day and be excited about going to work. Most people will think "oh, that is not a real job!" Well guess what Einstein? If you are working and dedicating your time to anything and you are making a living out of it, then it is a REAL JOB!

Also, if you are changing jobs all the time and can't find the right one for you, that does not mean you are a terrible person! Trying new things is always a good thing and one day you will find what works best for you. Some people love their traditional jobs and that is ok too but they need to know that not everyone is like that and just because they are not like that, does not mean that they are less of a person.

Having a "real" job is having A Job! It can be anything you want it to be! If you are making money and paying your bills you have "A REAL JOB". So, people out there who refer to non traditional jobs as "NOT REAL" please stop! Every job is a real job and it does not define the person. Maybe they are still finding themselves and need a job to just help with bills, maybe they have great plans that they are working on on the side but as long as they have a job, it is REAL! It is definitely not fake, or made up, it is A JOB!

So, if any of you guys have been  victims of the dreadful "Why don't you get a real job" or "Wait until you have a real job" remarks, and you are over there working your butt off everyday at your job, please let me know in the comments below because I know I'm probably not the only one..
